As the foundations of this dissertation build up on the idea of modes, the following chapter defines and presents key terms, characteristics, and principles. Based on our SLR on mode-switching from a security perspective, we extended this chapter with the snowballing approach by reference and citation tracking. Additionally, this chapter includes parts of our work on Multi-Mode Systems (MMSs) for resilient security in industry 4.0.
