This chapter argues that to fully make sense of common sense’s role for political judgment it is fruitful to move beyond Kant, to the pre-modern Humanist concept of sensus communis. The chapter first analyzes how within a post-Kantian understanding, the sensus communis remains hostage to cognitive judgments, as only these can add anything new about the world. Against this background, the chapter then goes back to the concept of sensus communis put forward by Vico. This allows to reframe common sense as a function of ingenium (wit): by operating through analogy, political judgments recognize new connections between elements of the world independently of cognitive judgments.
