A key component of current democratic crises is the growing inability to “think new beginnings”, as Arendt put it. That is, alternatives are increasingly hard to envisage. This difficulty is intimately tied to the technocratic tendencies that are inevitably part of mass democracy. Only by analyzing how technocracy delimits political judgments, can we fully understand the specificity of such judgments and how to envisage alternatives anew.
