Despite the lessons learned and the project’s contributions to existing research, it is also important to point out its limitations. The first limitation that needs to be kept in mind when reading this thesis is that it constitutes a single country case study that investigates citizens’ perceptions in 2022 and 2023. So, any results speak to the German context in 2022 when the CPEIG dataset was sampled, respectively 2023 when the i-voting analysis is concerned. Strictly speaking, this does not allow for any generalizations beyond this time and country context. However, the limitation regarding the time, I argue, can simply be overcome by repeatedly including the measurement instrument as a whole or in parts in future studies. It seems reasonable to assume that without any considerable changes of the election system or media environment, the measurement instrument should still be valid for the German context in the years to come.
