The Concept of Electoral Integrity and the Critical Role of Citizens

As the last chapter already indicated, scholars have found a variety of different ways to approach the question of how to assess the quality of an election, i.e., the degree to which an election can be considered democratic; respectively how to assess electoral integrity. While some researchers take a legal perspective considering provisions by international and national law as defining features of electoral integrity, others resort to international standards and norms, or democratic theory to deduct criteria to define electoral integrity.
