In 2010 Mechthild Bereswill, Christine Morgenroth and I edited a special issue of the journal Psychoanalysis, Culture & Society addressing the work of Alfred Lorenzer. This chapter stems from that collaboration, asking whether Lorenzer’s concept of the collective unconscious is under-specified. Comparing it to ideas in Tavistock organizational studies and the work of S.H. Foulkes, the chapter concludes that the concept of the collective (or social) unconscious needs clarification and that psychosocial research methods taking it as their object of enquiry need to be mindful of this fact.
