The increasing dissemination of digital technology across society marks a process of change at the micro, meso, and macro levels. Against this backdrop, the concept of a digital society gains increasing legitimacy. The digital transformation, in all its facets, is a constant subject of research, addressed by nearly all scientific disciplines from their unique perspectives. This volume synthesizes the core findings of the interdisciplinary Research Association NRW Digital Society (2018–2022), which was located at the University of Bonn and partnered by eleven other universities in North Rhine-Westphalia. The projects involved in this association explored numerous aspects of digital change and consistently linked their research to the overarching theme of ‘Strengthening and Securing Democracy in the Digital Society’. This introduction serves as a conceptual framework to contextualize and integrate the interdisciplinary approaches in this volume. For this purpose, it introduces the distinction between media-centre,ed and media-implementing concepts of the digital society. Furthermore, key concepts such as digital democracy, the digital transformation of the public sphere, and the digital transformation of institutions are elaborated. This is then linked to the contributing papers and their core findings, which are also presented.
