In order to reflect on, supplement, and expand the findings of the questionnaire study using qualitative data, an interview study was conducted in addition to the questionnaire study. This element was not initially planned at the start of the quantitative study, but was subsequently deemed useful in order to shed further conceptual light on how young people learn about democracy. The semi-structured individual interviews were intended, on the one hand, to make possible processes of meaning-making in the area of understanding democracy visible and to explore them; furthermore, the reasons and contexts for the identified effects were to be revealed.
