So-called clan crime has received increasing attention in recent years in German-speaking media coverage and also in criminological research. There is ongoing societal debate about whether and to what extent “clan crime” represents a significant criminal phenomenon. While the scientific community predominantly expresses critical views, questioning the usefulness and legality of measures to combat “clan crime” or fundamentally unwilling to recognize it as a distinct or novel phenomenon, security authorities emphasize police information suggesting that “clan crime” has the potential to negatively influence the public’s feelings of security. Consequently, they argue that special measures are necessary. However, an empirical impact on the population’s sense of security has not been substantiated to date (Görgen et al. 2022, p. 43). This chapter aims to reduce this knowledge gap. The research was designed to examine the public perception of “clan crime” using a topic modelling approach to analyze 84,484 YouTube comments. This revealed a wide thematic range. However, aspects such as feelings of security, fear or anxiety did not play a significant role in that analysis. Therefore, a quantifying content analysis of 545 comments containing the word “Angst” (fear/afraid) was additionally conducted to examine a possible influence of “clan crime” on the sense of security. It shows that commentators mentioned anticipated state authorities’ fear of “clan criminals” more often than the population’s fear.
