This study examines the self-portrayal practices and stigmatisation of individuals attributed with so-called clan affiliation in the context of the “clan crime” discourse on Instagram. Using netnography as a qualitative research method, the study provides insights into the digital lifeworlds of individuals labelled as clan members. The findings reveal that while a small number of self-stylizations reference criminal activities, the majority of representations show no connection to deviant behaviour. Instead, they primarily express experiences of stigmatization and racism. The study highlights the need of a more nuanced understanding of the “clan crime” discourse and the importance of including the perspectives of the affected communities.
