Chapter 9 is dealing with the problem of ‘autonomous machines’. The debate on human autonomy (Kant) and “technics-out-of-control” (Ellul; Winner) revives with the increased agential capacities of technologies of cooperating robots, autonomous driving and other systems of ‘distributed intelligence’ for navigation, flight operation or surveillance. This chapter presents a plea for an unbiased analytical approach allowing a more detailed examination of the distribution of agency and the degrees of autonomy. The argument is especially based on the analysis of different levels of self-activity in the dimensions of motorics, action, sensorics, and informatics. As a conclusion, the collaboration of engineers and social scientists is required when deciding how to distribute autonomy and control between human action and machine agency.
