In chapter 8, the theory of distributed agency and especially the gradual concept of action are developed and explained more systematically. Relevant positions concerning human technology relations (Reeves/Nash; Turing; Weizenbaum; Foner; Callon/Latour; Haraway; Collins/Kusch; McCarthy; Dennett) are reviewed and classified in an overview. Then our approach of distributed agency is developed step by step in contrast to dualistic concepts of conscious human action and merely functioning machines as well as to the monistic concept of actor-network theory (ANT). It opens the perspective to explore interactions and interactivities between heterogeneous agents in hybrid constellations more precisely with respect to degrees of autonomy and control.
