Chapter 10 explores how the concept of distributed agency can be applied to the case of ‘autonomous driving’ and ‘intelligent mobility’ in traffic systems. The author distinguishes between concepts of human and machine intelligence and three stages of social intelligence. In regard to engineering, he argues not to restrict the entire technological system to AI-based automation and optimizing specific technologies (navigation platforms; automatic traffic control; autonomous driving) but to include both the human-technology interactivities at different interfaces and the social interactions between the road users. In regard to social science, he enforces the non-dualist approach of distributed ‘social intelligence’ widening the view for more or less open interrelationships between human, material, and informational elements. The collective mobility behavior and the aggregated traffic dynamics emerge from these interactivities.
