This chapter addresses the crucial issue in social sciences, computing, digital society: how to distribute and attribute autonomy and control across the human, material, and digital sides, in light of the increasing agency of computer and AI technologies. The author outlines the four building blocks in his perspective—constitutive inter-activities; media/form theory of technization; gradual concept of agency; technographic style. He demonstrates how he draws from pragmatism and phenomenology, concepts of socio-materiality, social theories of action and practice, and particularly from computing; and how his pragmatist approach differs from mainstream sociology and actor-network-methodology. Finally, the abstracts of the following chapters give an overview over the conceptual contributions (Part I) and case studies (Part II) of the book.
