Organising freight transport efficiently is a key objective of LSPs. Various approaches may be used to define and measure efficiency, thus necessitating an explanation of practical challenges in utilising trucks efficiently and where exactly TS might be applied. This chapter therefore first provides an overview of understanding and measuring the efficiency of transport operations, then introduces relevant literature streams.
