The second chapter provides a comprehensive theoretical background on technological trajectories and technological paradigms. Within the context of disruption theory, the chapter shows how performance-improving paradigms can result in severe corporate inefficiencies. It introduces frugality as a new innovation paradigm for more adequately engineered innovations and highlights its potential as an enabler for sustainable development. At the same time, the chapter identifies theoretical gaps and paves the way for the subsequent empirical study.
