This chapter analyzes the challenges that traditional industrial companies face in the 21st century and addresses the importance of strategic innovation to ensure future viability. The previous focus in research & development on existing markets and technologies is no longer sufficient. Rather, a change is necessary, including towards more sustainability, but also new, digital business models. Examples from ebm-papst illustrate this necessity and show ways to define a clear innovation strategy that goes beyond purely technological developments and also includes business models and services to address new market opportunities.
