We continue our review of the individual areas within the Corporate Affairs function and will now discuss Internal Communications. Addressing one of the most important stake(s)holder groups of any organization, its workforce, the initiatives of this department are by definition inward-facing, and we will be able to demonstrate how these make a contribution as crucial to the commercial success of the business as the others that focus on the outside world. In Chap. 11 about Corporate Social Responsibility, we have already seen how concepts like Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) place the treatment of people within the company center-stage, and over the coming pages we will explore how communicating right with employees can help win their “minds, hearts, and hands.” In this context, we will also analyze the meaning of an Employee Value Proposition (EVP). The following section then deals with the crucial role of communication in the process of turning satisfied employees into engaged employees, the agents of that process, and specifically on how to get buy-in for change. In the context of proven Best Practices, we will introduce the concept of Symmetrical Internal Communications and what can be learned from platoon leaders. And following our own tried Best Practice, we end with the job description for a Head of Internal Communications.
