I can remember well, or at least I think I can, how as a child I sometimes walked to my parents with a slightly drooping head and said, “I’m sooooo bored.” Even before I could pronounce the L correctly, I was familiar with the feeling of slowly passing, unfilled time. And my parents’ response also became a familiar one—“Really? But that’s great, think of something new! Look, there you have… Look, the children over there,… Didn’t you always want to…?” The parent trick worked, most of the time I found something I could craft, paint, or imagine.
