Edward T. Hall: Cultural Dimensions as Consciousness-Building Frameworks
摘要
The cultural anthropologist Edward T. Hall is one of the most influential and significant personalities in the field of intercultural communication research. He understands culture as a holistic, coherent system of communication and interaction, along with its mostly unconscious repertoire of meanings and behaviors. Based on field studies, Hall introduced several important concepts for the study of interculturality, such as the cultural dimensions of proxemics (culture-specific spatial behavior), polychronic and monochronic (culture-specific temporal behavior), or high and low context (culture-specific information behavior), which are still being discussed in research and practice today. Cultural dimensions serve primarily to create cultural awareness and are used as categories to better understand, structure, and thus reduce complexity and improve intercultural understanding.
