In developing his theory, Jürgen Bolten searches for ways to represent and allow culture and culturality to exist as something that is characterized precisely by the fact that it cannot be grasped and fathomed. Bolten moves away from the binary and oppositional mindset that has characterized the field of intercultural communication. For Bolten, interculturality is therefore primarily a view of relations, which he describes with terms such as multi- and polyrelationality. Relationships are formed on the basis of reciprocity. Against this background, Bolten describes intercultural relationships as a dynamic of reciprocity that is constantly evolving over time. Bolten introduces the concept of fuzzy cultures to describe the imprecise and vague nature of culture.
