This chapter provides a current overview of a variety of participation formats used in police work. It becomes clear that there are many ways for the police to explore preferences and incorporate them into planning and decision-making. This ranges from the rather passive instruments of surveys or online surveys in the context of speed monitoring to shaping forms of citizen forums for event-related incidents, location- and district-related security inspections, or participation in steering groups within cooperative security partnerships. In general, it can be stated that police-initiated participation processes vary greatly in their degree of citizen participation and in their specific configurations. Various procedures of dialogue-oriented citizen participation can be used more intensively by the police.
