The assumption of evolutionist theorems in the development of material culture is discussed using the example of Bronze Age research. The mechanisms of gradualism and evolution through branching, initially only assumed for the typological classification of artifacts, then also influenced the interpretation topoi and metanarratives about the Bronze Age as such, and although no one would explicitly refer to them today, these mechanisms still determine the scientific as well as the popular image of the Bronze Age as a prehistoric epoch. This will be explained using a case study, the development of Bronze Age axe blades, and at the same time an alternative interpretation will be formulated.
