Genetically Informed Research Designs in Sociological Inequality Research. The Example of Educational Attainment
摘要
In this article, we demonstrate the added value of genetically informed research designs for the study of educational inequalities. We do this exemplarily for two central research areas of sociology: the intergenerational transmission of educational inequalities and the question of to what extent parental behavior compensates or accentuates the educational potentials of their children. For both research fields, we show that genetically informed designs not only contribute methodologically by controlling for unobserved environmental and genetic heterogeneity, but also contribute to the theoretical understanding of social inequalities by allowing the role of genetic influences on social inequality processes to be uncovered. Against this background, genetically informed research designs must be integrated into the methodological toolbox of inequality research.
