Development of a Passive Pre-Chamber Spark Plug for Passenger Cars Feasible for Mass Production

The transformation of mobility towards CO2 neutral powertrains is ongoing—here, internal combustion engines will play a significant role in combination with drop-in renewable fuels. To further increase the efficiency of future gasoline engine applications, a passive pre-chamber spark plug can make a significant contribution. The publication shows the systematic development from design to industrialization of a passive pre-chamber spark plug based on a close interaction of CFD with accompanying engine test bench investigations. There is a compelling need to focus on the whole system. This is reflected in the adaptation of knock detection strategies as well as in the parameter calibration of the engine control unit for adaptation to the passive pre-chamber plug. Final vehicle tests demonstrate the suitability of the pre-chamber spark plug in real applications with high driving dynamics, low loads, low-temperature cold starts and catalyst heating.
