Direct Air Capture: Core Technology for Carbon Negativity

It is mainly affected by the density of CO2 in the troposphere and the “thickness” of the greenhouse gas layer. As anthropogenic emissions continue, we need not only climate change mitigation measures to reach climate neutrality but also in the second half of the century several decades of carbon negativity. Without, climate change would even continue after reaching the “global goal of ZERO emissions”. Among others the upcoming direct air capture technology (“DAC”) is key to achieve this task. Based on renewable energy, independent from other CO2-sources such as industrial point sources or biogenic sources and theoretically not limited, it is the ideal puzzle piece for the first step of a carbon neutral circular economy. Our physical world needs carbon atoms in nearly every aspect of daily life. But to avoid the use of fossil carbon we need to extract the CO2 from the air or the ocean. Thus, avoiding the extraction and emission of new CO2 we then pass the CO2 on for further use. This might lead to a huge necessity or market of several thousand megatons by mid of this century. As pioneers Porsche AG and other entities of the Volkswagen Group and the eFuels company HIF Global are pushing the DAC technology forward to build a proof-of-concept pilot plant.
