Nature 2.0—Can Immersive Virtual Reality be a Possibility for Nature Experiences?
摘要
While digitization can be a reason for reduced contact with nature, new technologies also provide an opportunity to consider innovative ways of experiencing nature. This particularly applies to applications of immersive virtual reality (VR). However, since little is known so far about the possibilities of using this technology for nature experiences, this article describes theoretical foundations and current research approaches to the similarity of nature experiences in immersive VR and reality, and discusses them in the context of their use in educational settings. The implementation is outlined using three practical examples. Difficulties and open questions regarding the use of immersive VR for virtual nature experiences in educational contexts are finally classified. Overall, nature experiences in immersive VR cannot replace real visits to nature. However, when used appropriately, immersive VR can expand the range of actions for teachers, especially in formal education settings. However, there is still a great need for research on the possible effects of virtual nature experiences and their practical design, which particularly relates to the development of materials and the use of appropriate hardware.
