Nature Experience with Digital Technologies—Potentials, Challenges, and Examples

The use of digital technologies in environmental and nature education has been a topic of controversial discussion for many years—nature alienation versus pathways to nature contacts and learning opportunities. This article presents results from studies on this topic. Digital offerings are viewed in a new light. Today’s smartphones have reached a level of capability and come equipped with a variety of sensors that enable novel and interactive exploration possibilities in nature. In this way, young target groups can be more easily reached in their digital world and introduced to nature experiences that are difficult to achieve with classical or analog methods. For people with disabilities, processes in nature can be transferred to a different sense of perception and made tangible, audible, … However, all these approaches require well-thought-out and target group-appropriate effective offers. There is still a need for research and development in this area.
