The early version of Norwegian Military conscription dates to back to the Middle Ages. According to the current national law, both males and females, citizens of Norway, require completing compulsory conscription. Compulsory conscription for female came into effect in 2015. Currently, conscription is applied for male and female between the age of 19 and 44. Military conscription service in Norway is compulsory, but in practice people are not forced to serve against their will. After reformation of the conscription process in 2014, most Norwegians—about 85% in each cohort—are exempted from military service. Common outcome from the military selection process is found in formal dismissal after medical tests, planned studies or because of stays abroad. Moreover, an alternative service is available. The total duration of the conscription service is 19 months, of which 12 months are obligatory, the additional months are supposed to be served in upcoming exercises over the next 20 years or so, depending on rank and position. The first 12 months of military service is dedicated for the young soldiers’ training to obtain basic knowledge and skills necessary for the country’s military defense.
