Conscripts’ Intentions to Become a Military Professional
摘要
The chapter explores the relationship between conscripts' intentions to become a military professional and their attitudes towards state defense, satisfaction with conscript service, and sociodemographic variables. The analysis reveals that the central mechanism is a strong connection between the will to defend one's country and the intention to pursue an active-duty military career, which was apparent across all six countries under analysis. The influence of satisfaction with the conscript service showed country-specific differences. Effects of sociodemographic factors also differed among countries; however, gender was an important determinant in countries where service is voluntary for women (Estonia, Finland, Lithuania, and Switzerland). In these countries, women demonstrated a higher propensity to pursue a military career compared to men. In countries with gender-neutral and selective conscript service, such as Sweden and Norway, the gender-specific variance in the intention to become a military professional was either minor or non-existent. The data from Estonia and Lithuania, collected in 2021 and 2022, enabled us to examine how the onset of the Russo-Ukrainian war in 2022 affected conscripts’ interest in pursuing a military career. Interestingly, no notable effect was observed, despite the increased readiness to contribute to conscript service.
