“You are brown, you speak Spanish.” (…) “No, I am English”. Negotiating Diversity in Everyday Practices of a German Nursery School
摘要
Excerpts from an ethnographic study on multilingualism and literacy in a German nursery school are presented with the guiding question: How is diversity negotiated in everyday practices in a nursery school characterized by multilingualism and migration? Initially, diversity is defined as the totality of all constructions of difference that the field participants allude to in practices. Subsequently, constructions of difference generated from the data analysis are presented which relate to the languages employed by the field participants, their skin color, generation, positions within the nursery school, literacy practices and socialization fields. Situational positioning along these constructions, for example in relation to languages employed (‘English’ versus ‘German’ or ‘Spanish’), is complex and may align with or contradict discourses that extend beyond the immediate context.
