In recent years, the situatedness of knowledge has been an increasingly addressed topic in qualitative-interpretive and ethnographic research. The context in which researchers and participants are situated also plays an important role in the emerging field of diversity research. This article argues that understanding the researcher and the subject of the research is not possible without considering the ways in which inequality is generated through differences. Postcolonial theory is adopted as a theoretical reference point and its potential contribution to the discussion about diversity is explored. The idea of the subject as fragmented, defined by multiple affiliations, is particularly important. The relationship between orders of difference, inclusions and exclusions, and thus the theoretical scope of diversity conceptions, is critically examined using the example of the events surrounding the German national football team’s performance at the 2018 World Cup.
