This chapter discusses photosynthesis, a fundamental biological process. Green plants, algae, and certain bacteria use this photosynthesis to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen, which can be exploited biotechnically. Starting with the basics of photosynthesis this chapter also describes novel approaches to leverage artificial photosynthesis in microorganisms to produce biofuels such as butanol or hydrogen.
