The short-term impact scenarios and opportunities of strategic clarity and ambiguity have been discussed at length in the previous chapters. But what can happen in organizations, in journalism, and in society in the medium and long term when strategic ambiguity is used increasinglyoften? And: How does a society deal with an excess of ambiguity or clarity? These medium- and long-term consequences are the focus of this chapter. To summarise, the opportunities and risks of ambiguity (in)tolerance for organizations are first presented before the consequences of strategic ambiguity for the decoupling processes of organizations are examined, and the use of ambiguity practices is reflected upon from an ethical standpoint. The ethically questionable practices of strategic ambiguity highlight the special role and importance of journalism for this topic. For journalism, the considerations on (dis)ambiguating journalism and strategic clarity and ambiguity in strategic communication are first brought together and the similarities and differences are identified, before the question of whether journalists in fact know practices of strategic ambiguity is answered. After all, this is the prerequisite for being able to report on it (possibly critically) and thus answer the question of possible consequences for journalism. The final considerations on societal consequences are much broader. For this purpose, practices of strategic ambiguity and unambiguity are combined with the considerations on ambiguity (in)tolerance. After the functional or instrumental perspective has dominated in the previous chapters and the interpretative perspective in the chapter on the strategic communication play, the last two chapters will add a critical perspective.
