Sustainable Textile Technologies

Textiles literally touch us at any time: Apparel textiles provide protection against environmental influences such as heat or cold, home textiles enable us to sleep and rest conveniently, technical textiles may save lives e.g. as seat belts in vehicles. These aspects make the textile industry a major player in the international economic business world. The global annual production of fibres accounted to approx. 113 million tons in 2021. About 64% consisted of mostly polymer-based synthetic fibres while natural fibres accounted for the remaining 36%. Currently, the fibre production is mostly reliant on non-renewable fossil fuels, especially crude oil. This accounts even for natural fibres such as cotton since fossilbased fertilisers and dyeing agents may potentially be used. A transformation from fossil-based to renewable feedstocks is essential in order to enhance sustainabilty in the textile world. In general, three basic options for renewable feedstocks are available: The recycling of already used materials, the application of bio-based materials and the usage of materials that at least partially consist of (industrially) captured carbon dioxide (CO2). In this book chapter, the general principles of these three approaches for a transformation from the current linear-designed, fossil-based to a circular, renewable textile industry are presented.
