The Black Sea has turned into a geopolitical hotspot of international politics since the annexation of Crimea in 2014. In violation of international law, Russia now controls roughly two thirds of the Georgian (Abkhazian) coastline, and a significant part of the Ukrainian coastline, as well. The Black Sea is also one of the main starting points for the Kremlin’s involvement in the Middle East and the Mediterranean.
