Hybridizations of the Basic Models

The general presentations as well as the examples for the basic models, especially in Chps. 3 , 4 and 5 have already shown how powerful the use of one of the AL or AI models can be. This performance can be significantly increased if two or more of the basic models are coupled, thus constructing so-called hybrid systemsSystemhybrid. In applying the general modeling scheme that we presented in the first chapter, there are practically no limits to the applicability of AL and AI models. Although such hybrid systems sometimes appear somewhat complicated at first glance and are often so in implementation, they ultimately rely on a combination of techniques, each of which is fundamentally simple on its own. Above all, however, it must be considered that the modeling of social and cognitive processes, in particular, enters problem areas of which the biologist Richard Lewontin remarked that these problems make those of molecular biology appear “trivial” (Lewontin, 2000). Furthermore, hybrid systems allow the extension of the general modeling scheme explained in the second chapter; thus, not only the elements and the rules of interactions at the base level are determined, but also the elements and (meta)rules of the second and, if applicable, the third system level. The systems thereby become significantly more complex, as shown by individual examples.
