The Promise of Security

This chapter addresses the question: To what extent does the susceptibility to accepting security frames differ between individuals and contexts? Building on securitization theory, it has previously been argued that the role of the audience, whose acceptance is necessary to make an issue as a security problem, has been undertheorized and empirically underexplored. Utilizing data from the ISSP, this chapter attempts to discern a potential effect of security frames and test the extent to which this varies between individuals and contexts.
