Theoretical Foundation

  • Lukas Antoine

摘要

This chapter systematically summarizes the literature on privacy and security, introducing the theoretical foundations of their nexus. It examines the ongoing debate in privacy research, focusing on unified vs. pluralist definitions, with an emphasis on informational privacy. By exploring the benefits of privacy and its invasions, state justifications and citizen acceptance are analyzed through the privacy calculus theory. The chapter also discusses security, distinguishing between objective and subjective security, securitization, and critiques. The final section investigates the relationship between privacy and security, presenting hierarchical and trade-off perspectives.
