The aim of this volume is to (re)survey current configurations of the documentary under digital conditions in film sociology. The term ‘filmic documentarism‘ was chosen as a generic term for this purpose. With ‘filmic’, this term encompasses the current continuum of filmic varieties and with ‚documentarism‘, it refers to the specific relationship of the products to non-filmic reality. The aim of this introduction is to introduce and further conceptualize this term. This is because the question of ‚filmic documentarism‘ not only forms the heuristic bracket for the contributions collected here, but is also used to update central research questions and perspectives of current film sociology, such as the relationship between filmic and social reality, documentary and fiction, reality and irreality, truth and untruth, under digital conditions and especially with regard to artificial intelligence. The eyewitness videos of the Butscha massacre (2022) form the exemplary starting point for the definition of the term. They make it clear, that the answer to the fundamental question of the truthfulness of the filmic can never be sought in the filmic alone. Rather, this seems to be contourable when the analytical perspective detaches itself from a representational logic and treats filmic documentarism as independent aesthetic orders of thought.

摘要

The aim of this volume is to (re)survey current configurations of the documentary under digital conditions in film sociology. The term ‘filmic documentarism‘ was chosen as a generic term for this purpose.
