Introduction

Particle accelerators are used in various applications including basic research in nuclear and particle physics [1], mass spectrometry in chemistry [2] and radiation therapy in medicine [3]. For example, with the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN [4], protons can be accelerated up to energies of several TeV.
