Potentials of Islamic Religious Education at School

The article is based on the results of the empirical study Potentials of Islamic Education (Güzel, Potenziale des Islam-Unterrichts. Eine empirische Untersuchung zur Selbsteinschätzung muslimischer Kinder und Jugendlicher (Pädagogik und Ethik 13), Ergon, Baden-Baden, 2022) and offers an overview of the religious attitudes of Muslim children and adolescents regarding the potentials of Islamic religious education at school. Methodologically, thirty in-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with Muslim pupils from Islam and Ethics classes, which were compared and analyzed based on a structured qualitative content analysis (Kuckartz, Qualitative Inhaltsanalyse: Methoden, Praxis, Computerunterstützung, Beltz Juventa, Weinheim/Basel, 2016). The question of how Muslim pupils situate themselves religiously and how they assess their basic knowledge as well as their ability to reflect is investigated. Furthermore, it will be investigated to what extent Islamic religious education lessons at school offer a framework for the lifeworld needs of the children and adolescents, how they position themselves culturally and religiously, how they deal with conflict situations and experiences of exclusion, and what attitudes exist in dealing with diversity.
