A Comparison of China’s and India’s Standardisation Strategies: 11 Theses and Implications for Germany and Europe

In order to understand and compare the standardisation strategies of the two countries, it is necessary to consider them in the context of their development and modernisation strategies, which both began in the mid-twentieth century with national independence. Historical, socio-economic and geopolitical conditions provide a point of reference. In China, these led to a centralised path of economic and social development, while India struggled to hold together its fragmented social and economic structures. These patterns are reflected in the current trend towards greater strategic standardisation. China consistently pursues a clear and centralised plan with an ordered institutional landscape, while a hybrid model is emerging in India.
