This article advocates the need for philosophical competence in management. Enquiring into the nature of both management and philosophy the article shows that and where proficiency in philosophy in general and moral philosophy in particular is not only useful but a conditio sine qua non for managers. As management—or to be more precise: what is commonly called “normative management”—cannot do without (moral) philosophy, managers are called to become “philosopher managers” by developing and cultivating a habit of philosophical curiosity about the true causes of things. Without it, managers are not sufficiently well equipped for the fundamental task of normative management.
