Artificial Intelligence—Hype or Myth? Philosophical Aspects of an Entrepreneurial Success Story
摘要
This chapter discusses the question whether the present boom of AI is just one of the cyclically returning hypes? By applying the Gartner hype cycle model to some of the hypes of AI since the 1960s, it is argued that there must be a philosophical reason not just for their recurrence but also for their ever increasing economic success (e.g. OpenAI). At closer scrutiny this reason is located in deeply rooted archetypical narratives, i.e. myths. The case study of how the notion of AI was coined by the “Dartmouth conspiracy” reveals both the semiotic structure and the mechanism of action of the main myth of AI as well as of the derivative myths of Singularity and Posthumanism. Thus, the recent history of AI technologies is demonstrating the innovative impact an entrepreneurial use of metaphorical narratives, i.e. myths is capable of exerting over certain parts of the marketplace.
