Syria

Based on interviews with Syrian soldiers, activists and refugees, this chapter examines the use of mobile media by opposition groups and activists during the early stages of the Syrian civil war from 2011 to 2013. It finds that a fragmented telecommunications infrastructure emerged, with intact infrastructure in government areas but limited access in rebel areas. Mobile video became critical for documentation, mobilisation and propaganda in the face of limited internet access.
