The use of social network technologies to organise and coordinate concrete actions in the world, known as social media activism, is fundamentally influencing both public engagement in political protests and academic understanding of social movements. The following sections outline the role of social media as a tool for activism and how it crosses different domains, from conflict and crisis-affected regions to the unique contexts of the MENA region.
