Analysis and Discussion

In this chapter, I navigate the complicated landscape of the Arab Spring uprisings as they unfolded in different contexts across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, paying careful attention to the different outcomes in Tunisia, Syria, Iran and Palestine. The decision to focus on relative success as an issue stems from a desire to cast a critical eye on the nuances of each movement, dissecting not only the role of social media, but also the different socio-economic and socio-technical dynamics in each area. By categorising the movements according to their relative success - a spectrum with Tunisia at one end showing success and Palestine at the other, where goals were largely unmet, with Syria and Iran presenting mixed or ongoing outcomes—I seek to provide a richer, multifaceted narrative that goes beyond a binary analysis of success or failure.
