Ludger Kühnhardt’s commitment to and his confrontation with German democracy took place against the backdrop of the history of two German dictatorships. It led from the post-totalitarian West German consensus and German reunification to a country in search of a new societal compass and the newly endangered conditions for the preservation of a liberal order. The increasing societal pluralism set ever stronger limits to the state and party political efforts to establish a common order model in Germany.
