Since October 2017, the Faculty of Mathematics at TU Dresden has been responsible for the academic training of second career mathematics teachers. In our article, we present the programme for scientific education in the Faculty of Mathematics and address the specific requirements in academic teaching. On the basis of selected results of various surveys, we exemplify the challenges we face in the education in mathematics and in the subject didactics of mathematics. We present how we meet these challenges and discuss conditions for success. In the conclusion, we use criteria for the effectiveness of teacher training and standards of academic profession in teacher education to discuss the extent to which the qualification programme is an effective teacher training format and what desiderata still exist.
